Revenge of the Helldiver: A Player's Quest to Take Down a Griefer
Oct-17-2024
Playing Helldivers 2 can reach thrilling heights, but one of the game's most frustrating aspects is the presence of players who disrupt the experience for others. While the game encourages cooperative play, some individuals seem oblivious to this, prompting one player to deliver a memorable response to a particularly disruptive participant.
This player took it upon themselves to locate the disruptive gamer multiple times, each time under different usernames, methodically dismantling all the troublemaker's efforts. Though some may view this as overreacting, the player's actions serve as a deterrent, possibly making the griefer think twice before ruining the experience for others again.
A viral account on a gaming forum detailed this player's journey as they pursued a griefer who had knocked out their team following a successful mission. While many opt to move on and start anew upon encountering such players, this individual hatched an elaborate plan to retaliate against the instigator.
Initially, the griefer recognized the player's username and foolishly taunted them before ejecting them from the game. In response, the player switched usernames, equipment, titles, and weaponry, ultimately locating the griefer once more. Each encounter saw the player behaving normally until they reached extraction, at which point they targeted the griefer and sent a playful message in the chat.
By utilizing the recent players feature, the player cleverly managed to join the games of the disruptive player, managing to eliminate the griefer around a dozen times in total. This act of vengeance highlights the extent some players will go to in order to address unacceptable behavior.
The phenomenon of teamkilling just before extraction has captured the interest of some unsportsmanlike players, leading to the creation of an informal game mode dubbed "Last Man Standing." In this variant, participants call for extraction but then turn on each alternative, with the final competitor remaining as the sole survivor eligible for extraction.
This proposition faced considerable backlash from the community, as it further aggravated the negative impact toxic players have on the gaming environment. Helldivers 2 is fundamentally about teamwork, and there is a dire need for measures to address the toxicity that some players introduce.
While the degree to which this player went to exact their revenge might be seen as excessive, the griefer now faces the unsettling reality that any random participant could potentially be their pursuer. It is highly likely that they will reconsider their actions before engaging in any further teamkilling.
